The Great Blue Heron / Le grand héron

The Great Blue Heron

I shot this heron while canoeing in a bayou in Homosassa, Florida. It is very difficult to to get within photo range of a heron in Québec, even with a 400 mm telephoto, they are simply to shy. This is not so in Florida where herons, egrets and others can be seen in great numbers, often at short distance. It is simply the Photographer's Paradise, nothing less.

A great heron used to come near the house where we lived each morning, while a blue heron; could often be seen perching on one of the boats...

I kept thinking that visiting Florida photographers would probably wonder at the familiarity of our blackbirds or blue jays or the many colours of our warblers.

I love this Blue Symphony, with those blue notes everywhere, the bird's feathers, its head, and the water.

  6. roger, each time i see one of your bird images i think it is my favorite - each time - and then i find this "symphony in blue" as your wife so aptly calls it and i am even surer that this is my favorite - the clarity of color and texture is absolutely perfection - and while i have never been a "blue" person, with this, you have converted me -

  11. @Hélène : Tu as raison bien sûr.

  12. @Jenean: This is indeed a very nice compliment from your part. But beware! One cannot come up with such images very often. I guess that if I went to Florida for at least two months, doing only photography, I would come back with more impressive images. But one has to cope with ordinary facts of life, like getting rid of dead leaves, renovating the house, all those stupidities.

    Roger :-)
