Une sorcière à Baie-Saint-Paul / A Sorceress In Baie-Saint-Paul

A Sorceress In Baie-Saint-Paul

This is not great photography, I will concede the point readily. But this head made me laugh, that's all… :)

Cape Cod

Cape Cod

From time to time, it's worth the effort to get up early in the morning and hop in the car for a ride before sunrise.

Tourterelle triste / Mourning Dove

Tourterelle triste

Mourning Dove

The mourning doves are back. There were about ten of them in my driveway yesterday, busy ingesting small stones and other good things, mainly salt. Shot through the window with a Canon 5Ds 50MP body equipped with a Canon 300mm L pro telephoto.

This one was rather brightly coloured for a dove and didn't seem sad at all. For a mourning dove, that is.

Foutus ciels blancs ! / Bloody White Skies!

Foutus ciels blancs !

Bloody White Skies!

There is nothing worse for a photo than a white sky without any contrast. Such a sky may seem luminous but is in fact a poor source of light, giving you dark photos against a sky too bright, killing all contrasts and colours. It's the same for all photographers, it's a plight we have to live with.

There is no easy way to solve this. The only way I know and use is Photoshop on RAW files in 16 bits per colour. And then you work with layers, often multiple layers, isolating first the sky, and then, in this case, the building itself from the rest. It is a lot of work and cannot be done fast, not if you aim to create a good image.

This is what I did in the example below. The first photo shows the final image, the second one is the photo right from the camera.

This is the Notre-Dame du Crann chapel in Spézet, France.

Tout un ami ! / What A Friend!

What A Friend!

This was ten years ago in Lafayette, IN. The fact that this guy is still my friend after all these years is downright astonishing. :)

En revenant du Saguenay… / Back From Saguenay…

Coeurs fragiles s'abstenir. :)

Back From Saguenay…

Major snowfall while going to Saguenay, another one in Saguenay, a third one while coming back… it's not getting any better. But this is not a valid reason to be slowed down by those stupid snowploughs. Five minutes later we all were in front of them. This is not for the faint-hearted… :)

La route vers le Saguenay… / The Road Towards Saguenay…

Pfui ! :)

The Road Towards Saguenay…

The town of Saguenay is 500 km to the northeast of Montréal, 200 km farther than Québec City. During the winter, the mountainous road between Québec and Saguenay can be treacherous for the unskilled driver. You can see why winter tires are mandatory… That day Hélène was at the wheel and was driving at good speed, as any good driver from Québec would do. No reason to slow down for nothing, right? :)
