I Will Probably End This Blog

I received today from Blogger an email stating in its first paragraph:

You are receiving this e-mail because one or more of your blogs at Blogger.com are set up to publish via FTP. We recently announced a planned shut-down of FTP support on Blogger Buzz (the official Blogger blog), and wanted to make sure you saw the announcement. We will be following up with more information via e-mail in the weeks ahead, and regularly updating a blog dedicated to this service shut-down here: http://blogger-ftp.blogspot.com/.

I am not sure at all what they mean. My blog is hosted by Blogger. However, all the photographs are on my own server, which means that they are placed by FTP process on my server. As I understand, Blogger is about to prohibit that.

Blogger says that images should be placed on Picasaweb which belongs to Google, as Blogger does. I say no to that.

I say no. And I will stand by this "no" unless somebody can show me how to improve the photo quality on Picasaweb. Through Picasaweb, Blogger takes important decisions. I just uploaded a 1200x1800 image in Picasa. It was a 320 KB file. Picasa reduced the image to 1052x1600 and reduced the file size by two thirds (of my own 1052x1600 file). The only way to do that is to reduce jpeg quality significantly. I do not see how I can accept that.

There is also this small problem that Picasaweb tools for OS X are rudimentary. Google does not seem to know that high end photography is a Macintosh niche.

If this is the only avenue I've got for my images, then I will very regretfully close this blog within a month or so. I will of course listen to any suggestion you can have.

I will keep you informed. In the meantime, I thank you all very much for your support.

Je me refuse à cela.

  1. Roger in my opinion if you keep your photos on your own server then shut this blogger crap down and make your own blog. if they are stupid why sould you?

  2. @bogudan: Oh I''m thinking of it! It would be reasonably easy. What I would regret is the easy integration with the photographers on Bllogger. People like you, like Marius and others. This "Followers" thing has its good points for following what is done and I like it.

Maybe I could trick Blogger, but I'm not sure of it!

You see, Google is trying to concentrate all operations in its own hands. All research, Google, Web images, Google. Blogs, Google. Maps, Google.

They are doing a real web around us, and we will be stuck in it.

  9. I for one will sorely miss you if you go Roger. I think there are other options like hosting your own blog. If you take that route please let me know where it is so I can keep following and keeping contact.

    Blessings to you!

  15. I`m sure this is not the end of interacting, even if it is the end of the blog, eventually.

    Pro keeping this blog:

    1. Keep in mind that 1052x1600 (ridiculous stupid for a Google`s server) is still bigger than my ordinary 19`` monitor resolution. Only those who have professional or monitors over 24`` (which usually support more than 1900X1200) will see the difference on your picture. The vast majority of others will see your pics in full screen.

    2. You use us with a great photographic quality, but I cannot see a drawback if I`ll have to contemplate a smaller size of your picture. You wrote about one of my picture to have some pink nuance I CANNOT see on MY monitor. So, your professional monitor shows a HUGE wider range of colors, for sure. Few of us have the opportunity to scrutinise your pictures on a professional monitors.

    Con keeping the blog:

    1. Blogger (Google) gathered too many bloggers and the tendency is to eliminate good featured we were used to, because Google simply doesn`t care anymore!!!

    2. There are many others who STILL have greater features, ex. Wordpress.

    3. Even a blog on your site could have a fed and one can subscribe easy to it. Plus, an independent blog allows you for any features you`d like. Plus, you can insert "subscribe" buttons for many others who have not blogger accounts.

Good luck with that tough decision!

  17. Roger, I know the only change is the transfer of the old image server Blogger for Google Pages because yesterday had this warning on my blog's layout. I made the transfer without any problem.
One option would be to host the pictures on Photobucket and publish to HTML, redirecting the image to link to your blog.

    Resist!
