Garden Flower / Fleur de jardin

Garden Flower

I took this photograph in windy conditions. In order to get a shallow depth of field with a good bokeh, I used the Canon 180 mm macro coupled with the 1.4x extender on the full-sized sensor of the Canon 5D Mark II. I obviously needed light and speed, so I chose ISO 2000, f/9 and 1/500 s.

Here, post-processing is limited to noise removal with Neat Image as a plug-in in Photoshop CS5, followed by a very slight sharpening. Don't be fooled though: using ISO 2000 or greater is a very risky business if you do not use a top-notch DSLR with a full-sized sensor. With ordinary DSLRs, it's safer not to go over ISO 1250.

How long does it take you to set up and install your equipment? Of course, that flower wasn't going anywhere, so you were able to select and arrange the proper combination of equipment but how long did it take? Also, how about the settings? How many pictures did you take altogether with different settings?

Nice bokeh, by the way (thank you, Wikipedia).

  3. WOW! That's beautiful Roger! There are some people that say that flowers are an overworked theme, but I can just never get enough, especially when they are so wonderfully taken. Technically perfect, visually magnificent. Keep them coming.

You are so right about high ISO levels...

  6. Thank you all... How about "I was darned lucky"? Here, the difference between nice and beautiful, it's luck as it is so often the case.

@ David: You are right, an overworked theme. And this is why this is the only one I kept of a whole series taken this afternoon of different flowers. The others simply did not have this little thing...

@ Suzanne : merci...

@ HBFG : You said it, it's a matter of bokeh, the result of a wonderful lens in that case. A good bokeh was necessary for a decent background.

@ Adela: Thanks... I wish it was possible to use very high ISO on less expensive cameras. It is simply not possible, too much noise because there are not enough photons on smaller sensors, specially in shadows :-(((
