The Hated JPEG Format / Le format jpeg détesté

The Hated JPEG Format - Second Look On The Preceding Post

I looked again at the image I posted in the preceding post (Fog Over The Saguenay Fjord) and saw to my amazement the pinkish tinge in the fog. Arggh!!! This image was saved in jpeg at setting 9 out 12, from the 16-bit psd file. Needless to say, there is no such tinge in the psd file. I saved it again at setting 12 and this is the picture you can see below. Not perfect, but still better.

Very low contrast images like this one are often partly destroyed by the jpeg format. Nothing to be done really. This is why I use jpeg only for web publishing, nothing else. Each photograph is shot in RAW and then post-processed in 16-bit psd format. Why throw away good information, I ask you?

@Lionel: Thanks for the praise, we need it sometimes...

And you're so right about the RAW format:the modern negative! But a negative that you can modify as fast as your computer can take it, without destroying the original... Moreover, the camera does not wreak havoc with the RAW file and gives it to me without modifying it, thank God!

  6. hello Roger Gauthier.
I prefer to use RAW files when a take my photos, then i transform to jpeg, you are right, when making a post to the blog some little details are lost.
But this picture is interesting, because, it leaves some parts of the photo not revealed, i think is more a kind of fantastic.
All the best, have a nice day, see you soon.

  7. Thanks for your opinions, Suzanne, Paul and José.

About the picture itself, I think that I was lucky. Kind of being at the right place at the right moment, had only a few minutes before it disintegrated!

This RAW format business has sparked some heated discussions in some circles. No doubt it takes more time, won't you agree José? But then, results are usually well worth it..

  10. Wow, so much magic! The fog is a strong element of composition. Excellent photo, very powerful.

With lack of contrast (and just because of that), the whole place seems to be a wonder land, taken from childhood fairy tales. Perfect for books for children or a greeting card.

I`m impressed that even if I`d crop parts of the photograph, those parts have their own lives. The magic of the whole transfers to the smaller parts and the smaller details (splendid church, few trees, almost unseen houses) feed the whole photo.

10 out 10 for your previous post and 10 out of 10 with a star for this one.

  11. Hi Vaggelis, France and Marius,

I humbly repeat that this was such a huge piece of luck. It sent me into a moment of perfect bliss. How many times does that happen to us, I ask you? Perfect conditions, two or three minutes to take a shot... lucky to have been there.

Marius, you are absolutely right. You could reframe almost at will and get surprising results. Quite strange.

  12. I struggle with the appearance problem too, especially on B&W images for some reason. But JPEG is it for this format and that's the way it is. I work to keep my monitor and printer all nicely calibrated, but somehow on the web, after uploading and linking, they're rarely what I expect to see. I just remind myself that everyone is going to see something different on their system no matter what I do on my end anyway, and try not to worry about it TOO much. That's what fine prints are for and why I love them.

  14. Hello Mark, thanks for your thoughts about this jpeg business. You're right, real calibration of a system as a whole, preferably with a spectrometer, is necessary, and printing is an art all by itself. Never the same on paper and on screen...

I've found PICASA to murder pictures very often. For one, PICASA expects you to load pictures with an sRGB profile so you must make sure to convert first. And some browsers like Explorer have trouble with anything else than sRGB...
