The Pianist - Self-Portrait / Le pianiste - auto-portrait

The Pianist - Self-Portrait

I took this one eighteen months ago. I've had problems with my left hand for some time now. I then realised that I could not play the piano anymore, and this was the last time I touched our beloved, magnificently maintained baby grand.

Light shines from the written music, but the leaden left hand can't follow anymore. Life goes on.

I was never any good anyway. But I loved playing this piano oh so very much.

My love of always, a true pianist and musician as we rarely see, became deaf at the age of 18. Such a wonderful musician. Twenty years ago, she became so deaf that she stopped playing. She had a cochlear implant last year and she now hear music and plays the piano again. Isn't this marvellous?

Maybe she will play some Chopin when she comes back. And I love her.

Le pianiste - auto-portrait

J'ai pris cette photo il y a dix-huit mois. Ma main gauche me causait des problèmes depuis plusieurs années déjà.

  1. "Bright cap and streamers,
    he sings in the hollow:
    come follow, come follow,
    all you that love.
    leave dreams to the dreamers
    that will not after,
    that song and laughter
    do nothing move.
    with ribbons streaming
    he sings the bolder;
    in troop at his shoulder
    the wild bees hum.
    and the time of dreaming
    dreams is over -- -
    as lover to lover,
    sweetheart, i come.

Hi Roger, sorry to hear you can not play the piano, when I read your words about the love of your life I must think of the breath taking film I have seen made in New Zeeland, whenever I think of it I almost cry when I remember the sound conected to a, oh, sooo beautifuly made picture motion and from the thought of silent power of love.
This one is for you and your love, and this photo of yours is dreamlike, very beautiful! Take care,:O)

  4. Wonderful self-portrait. It introduces me to that precious moment: music and light, absorption and play. In a word the pianist`s inner feelings.

    Touching story.

  9. Hello you there, thanks for commenting on this post. Life goes on... nothing to be sorry about. All of your comments are very thoughtful and I do not want do single out one of them. Suzanne, who is a long time friend now, is right: I rarely do this kind of thing.

This is another beautiful day, I'm going out trekking with my camera. Let's share a laugh... :-)

@France: Go through Plogoff to La Baie des Trépassés. It's almost deserted these days... From the beach, look towards the West, you will see me.

  13. Thank you, The Photophile! I did not dare say it, but this is probably one of my best pictures of the last two years. You know how it works, all of a sudden you have this inspiration, no reason why, and you know that you have something with potential. One of those rare moments.

It's also a tribute to the fact you don't need a very high precision in each case. if I dared do something different, it was to scrap definition, I didn't need it.

You will find the history of the file in Photoshop's metadata. I know, you're working with TheGimp, a very good alternative... :-)

Merci, The Photophile !

Nasty Blogger, didn't even tell the love of his life that he was talking about her. She who loves him too.

  15. if i may be so bold, mr gauthier, "it" works simply because of the true ethereal essence of the subject which, in this case, would easily overshadow any imperfection of technique or camera, should there have been any in the first place - breathtaking image!

  18. Thank you Hélène, Élisabeth, Jenean et Erdei for the kind comments. This is a very important picture for me, very emotional, and still now it's not easy to look at it with a cool mind. But as I wrote, life goes on and there are so many marvelous things, including being able to do this picture. Thank you all very much.

Merci beaucoup.
