Correcting Over-Sharpening / Correction d'une accentuation exagérée

Correcting Over-Sharpening

Whatever the method used, from time to time we have to sharpen more than usual. In other circumstances, even a normal sharpening will create unwanted effects on part of the picture

Whatever the reason or the method, if the results contain undesirable halos, you've got to get rid of the halos - or of the picture.

There are several technical methods of reducing halos. The one I present here looks like retouching. It is strongly recommended to use an electronic pen with a graphic tablet for the fine control you will need.. A trackpad is certainly out of question.

Look at picture 1 which is part of a high resolution image at 200 %. It is easy to see the whitish halo. Fortunately, one can easily get rid of such a halo using the Clone Stamp Tool with the Darken mode and Aligned offset. Adjust the diameter appropriately (here I used 33, but you will have to experiment).

Don't forget: this is a drawing-like operation. With a bit of practise, the pen flows freely and rapidly. More important, it's dead easy and results are near perfect.

Picture 2 shows the final result. You now have a very crisp image, but no halo. As long as you publish small images on the web, don't bother. If you want to make big prints, this may well help you - taking into account the fact that you will need at least an hour to do a good job.

  3. Roger and Friends,
I have used an alternate method that works quit well, it is, however also a slow painstaking job.

I use the clone stamp, with a small brush diameter, set at about 75% hardness, with opacity set at about 50%. Taking your cloning pixels from as near the destination source as possible, adjusting the source location as often as necessary to keep from creating a problem similar to what you are attempting to repair.

There are certain images for which this method will be problematical; complex images, or images with large and radical color changes. But over all when you have a single subject this method can work well for printing purposes.

If you take your photography seriously, whether professional or not, then you should really consider a pen and tablet. If nothing else they really look cool . . . . . now if only made one in red.

Steff: Think nothing of it. I learn a lot from your comments, guys. I'm just trying to be useful a bit!

Jim: Your method works very well but you must be much more precise to get good results IMHO. I mean, for the kind of image I presented here.

For the graphic tablets, I certainly do agtree. After all, Steff and you were the guys who convinced me! :-)
