Don't fret, I also too some tourist shots in Edinburgh, they will come a bit later.

I positively loved Edinburgh, much more than London that I didn't like very much in fact. Edinburgh, a city with a certain defiant touch, where people speak their own type of English and a very Scottish accent indeed. A Scot is a Scot! :-)

Moon Over Edinburgh

I'm back at last, for better or for worse, with more than 5800 photos to sift through, keeping only the reasonably good ones and working on them. This will take several months I'm afraid. No way I will be finished anytime soon.

Let's begin with this moon over Edinburgh, a first sign that we mainly had very nice weather during this almost six-week trip to Edinburgh, London, Paris, Nantes, La Rochelle and Brittany.

L'art de la sélection en photo /The Art Of Selecting In Photography

The Art Of Selecting In Photography

Most of the time, the photographer should post-process the sky independently or vice versa. The same is true for other parts of an image. Sometimes, one wants to simply replace part of an image by something else from another image, for example the whole background. In order to do this, one has to carefully select part of the image, and the most difficult selection problem is usually a person's hair from the background.

In order to do this, the best tool and bu far is the new Select And Mask workspace in the latest Photoshop CC iteration. I will not lie to you, this is really hard work and the learning curve is steep. But after a certain trial and error period, using this tool is easy and results can be stunning. Beware of videos about this on the web, even on Adobe's website: the guys tend to use easy to solve examples and it's misleading. Real life is harder than that but it can be done.

I've chosen for you a very complex selection problem, replacing the background behind James Longster… This is an acceptable portrait but the background is far from optimal. The first photo shows you the original shot without any work on it.

In the second image, I've completely replaced the background and progressively blurred the new one. I then uncentered James, and then did my usual tricks on his face to make him look almost human. The final file on disk is more than one GB.

Paysage d'Indiana dans le soleil aveuglant / Indiana Landscape In The Blinding Sun

Indiana Landscape In The Blinding Sun

Too often a beautiful landscape will yield a mediocre photo. This is a common problem under a blinding sun, giving a photo with some bleached out zones, and others that are almost black, specially if the landscape is complex.

I've used here a technique derived from HDR photography. The way I proceed is complex and beyond the scope of this blog. My goal was to reproduce what my mind saw, something that no camera can do without a lot of help from the photographer.

The sea seems almost placid in the first photo below, but it's already very different in the next two ones, shot two hours later. Was it enough to discourage a die-hard photographer? Hardly. After all, the sea would not dare touch my gear, right? We will see what is going to happen in the photographs I will publish later today.

Oh yes. If you don't believe me, ask Françoise and Yves from Brittany, they will tell you. Ask all our friends who visited us en May which is the lobster local fishing period, an abundant but highly protected specias.

The one you see here weighs almost six pounds and I ate it all. Hélène had a smaller one weighing almost 3.5 pounds. Enormous, tender and juicy, they're cooked and cut for us at the fish counter and are ready at the exact time we specified.

We have such a feast twice during the month of May. Costly, but they're the very best after all!

Cloudy skies can easily kill a photo. If there is at least a bit of blue, it is often possible to get something interesting out of it, but one has to post-process the sky independently. Pas un tuba mais un euphonium ! / Not A Tuba But An Euphonium!

Not A Tuba But An Euphonium!

When I published a first photo of this musician, I said erroneously that his instrument was a tuba. Well, I was mistaken, it is an euphonium, as suggested by Normand Perry who would certainly know, being a tube player himself. Never too late to learn.

I include en enlargement boosted to 115 megapixels in order to show the instrument's embouchure… and illustrate the photo definition. I shot this photo with what has now become my second camera, a Canon 5D Mark II with a 21.1 megapixel full-frame sensor.
