L'art de la sélection en photo /The Art Of Selecting In Photography

The Art Of Selecting In Photography

Most of the time, the photographer should post-process the sky independently or vice versa. The same is true for other parts of an image. Sometimes, one wants to simply replace part of an image by something else from another image, for example the whole background. In order to do this, one has to carefully select part of the image, and the most difficult selection problem is usually a person's hair from the background.

In order to do this, the best tool and bu far is the new Select And Mask workspace in the latest Photoshop CC iteration. I will not lie to you, this is really hard work and the learning curve is steep. But after a certain trial and error period, using this tool is easy and results can be stunning. Beware of videos about this on the web, even on Adobe's website: the guys tend to use easy to solve examples and it's misleading. Real life is harder than that but it can be done.

I've chosen for you a very complex selection problem, replacing the background behind James Longster… This is an acceptable portrait but the background is far from optimal. The first photo shows you the original shot without any work on it.

In the second image, I've completely replaced the background and progressively blurred the new one. I then uncentered James, and then did my usual tricks on his face to make him look almost human. The final file on disk is more than one GB.
