Je ne sais pas s'il aurait fait exactement cela, mais lui aussi se serait demandé : Mais que fais-je donc avec tout cet espace ?

Trop d'espace ? Mais je l'ai agrandi encore cet espace et j'en ai fait disparaître toute référence spatiale. Et pour faire bonne mesure, je lui ai donné toute la place !

Alors dis donc, ami James, dis donc, qu'en penses-tu ?

I photographed this dragonfly some time ago but was never satisfied with the result. I reworked the same photo from scratch this week. asking myself what James would have done with it. I don't know if he would have exactly what I did, but he would have had to solve the same problem: But what do I do with all that space?

Too much space? But I just gave it more space to that space and got rid of any reference to any worm that was there! And to add insult to injury, it now occupies all the centre of the image!

Now tell me, James my friend, pray tell me, what do you think of it?

Certains des blogues que je suis sont infectés par un ou plusieurs logiciels malveillants qui font apparaître de la publicité non sollicitée dans des fenêtres indépendantes. ata.ro est un des plus intrusifs parce qu'il empêche l'accès à votre blogue ou ses commentaires.

Je suis actuellement en train d'analyser le code-source de tous les blogues que je suis qui posent un problème de ce genre. Il y en a près d'une demi-douzaine.

Notez que le codage et les algorithmes, ça fait aussi partie de mes qualifications. Si je vous dis que votre blogue contient du code dangereux, vous pouvez être certain que c'est vrai.

F. P., actrice et écrivaine du boulevard Davout, ton blogue est infecté par le logiciel malveillant ata.ro. Je l'ai retrouvé de façon répétitive dans le code-source, comme le montrent les deux illustrations ci-dessous. ata.ro n'est pas un virus mais bien un logiciel malveillant. N'empêche, il cause un tas d'emmerdements.

Si vous avez remarqué quelque chose d'anormal dans votre blogue et désirez mon avis, il me fera plaisir de voir si je peux identifier le problème.

Some of the blogs I follow are infected by one or several malware that create unwanted ads in pop-up windows. ata.ro is one of the most intrusive and may block access to your post or your comment section.

I am in the process of checking the code of the blogs that I follow and that behave in such an unusual manner. There are maybe half a dozen of them.

Please note that I know what I am talking about: coding and algorithms are one of my fields. If I tell you that your blog contains malware, you can take it to the bank, it's true.

F. P., actress and writer from the Davaut boulevard, your blog is infected by ata.ro malware. I found it in the source-code of your blog, as can be seen in the two images below. ata.ro is not a virus, it is malware. It's a lot of trouble anyway.

If you think that there is something suspicious in your blog or in one of the blogs you follow, it will be my pleasure to have a look and give you a diagnosis.

I wonder how often Kenny, who is penniless, has been arrested by American police because of racial profiling. Quite often, I would say.

The American police departments must be completely reformed. In order to restore a beginning of order and trust, the United States must first get rid of all those guns that cause so many killings, rewrite the Constitution and be done with this stupid Second Amendment, and truly accept to share wealth, as it's done in all other western countries. The powder keg's fuse is getting shorter all the time.

Désolé pour cette absence prolongée. Nous sommes allés faire un voyage aux États-Unis suivi d'un court séjour en auberge dans les Cantons de l'est. En tout cas, me revoici…

Les États-Unis sont assis sur un gigantesque baril de poudre et n'ont pas l'air de s'en rendre compte. Du moins pas encore.

Ce baril de poudre, c'est la minorité noire, méprisée, maintenue dans une pauvreté abjecte, sans espoir de s'en sortir.

Amis Américains, réveillez-vous. C'est votre faute. Votre police sauvage, votre individualisme forcené, le refus de distribuer la richesse, et le foutu deuxième amendement. Les armes omniprésentes, une des causes d'un taux d'homicide effroyable et inacceptable dans tout autre pays évolué.

C'est toute votre société qui est à repenser. Son mécanisme même est détraqué, et vous avez beaucoup de pain sur la planche. Ne lancez pas le blâme à la communauté noire, ce sont vous les responsables.

Que de pauvreté, que de tristesse aussi. J'y reviendrai.

Ci-dessous, la première d'une série de photos d'un Afro-Américain que j'ai eu le privilège de photographier dans une ruelle. Tristesse est le mot qui me vient à l'esprit.

The United States And The Powder Keg

I've been away for a while, sorry about that. We were on vacation in the United States, and then went for a short trip in the Eastern Townships. In any case, I'm back…

The United States is sitting on a gigantic powder keg and doesn't appear to know it. Not yet at least.

This powder keg, it's the African American minority, despised, maintained in abject poverty, without hope.

American friends, wake up! Its time to get real, it's your fault. A brutal police force that profiles Black people, your shameful individualism, your refusal to share wealth, your deadly Second Amendment. Your ubiquitous firearms at the source of the highest homicide rate of the whole western world and by a very wide margin.

You have to rethink the way your whole society works. You have a huge task in front of you, and it won't be easy.

So much poverty, so much sorrow. I will be back on this.

You can see below the first of a series of photos I took of an African American, photos that I had the privilege to take in an alley. Those eyes are so sad that they break my heart.

Oui, mais… comment expliquer le rocher dans le coin inférieur droit, qui est bel et bien à l'endroit, lui ?

La vérité, c'est que oui, j'ai inversé la photo, elle s'y prêtait fort bien d'ailleurs. Par la suite, je me suis rendu compte que le coin inférieur droit semblait vide. Alors j'ai rajouté un rocher à la photo, mais à l'endroit ! Voir l'original ci-dessous, qui n'est pas une vilaine photo en soi. Il faut bien s'amuser un peu.

Le post-traitement de cette photo a progressé considérablement depuis 2011. Je ne suis toujours pas satisfait. Je vous propose ici deux versions, la deuxième étant d'abord et avant tout un recadrage pour faire disparaître la ligne d'horizon. Il y avait une très légère brume. Le soleil étant placé comme il l'était, conjugué avec l'angle de la photo, l'horizon nuit beaucoup plus qu'autre chose à mon avis. À vous de juger.

Brittany's Coast: Audierne

This post-processed photo is way better dans the version I originally published in 2011. It's still classified as work in progress though. There was a slight haze, the sun was at the wrong place and the angle didn't help any. In those conditions, the horizon is more a nuisance than anything else. This is why I also propose a second version, which is essentially a cropped version of the original. It gives a slightly better image in my opinion. Now that's up to you to say what you think.

La Grande Arche

La Grande Arche

Située dans le quartier de la Défense, la Grande Arche est un des monuments les plus difficiles à photographier de Paris.

Mise à jour : Note l'architecture de Paris

Paris a toujours résisté au changement. Le Paris d'aujourd'hui, il ne faut pas l'oublier, est très dix-neuvième siècle, son architecture et sa structure même ayant été complètement bouleversées par le baron Haussmann, un changement nécessaire très fortement critiqué à l'époque. Il en résulte une ville dont le centre est très homogène et qui, ma foi, continue à résister au changement. Après l'expo de 1889, il a été très fortement question de jeter la tour Eiffel à terre tellement les gens la trouvaient affreuse. L'arrivée d'autres éléments comme le centre Pompidou, la tour Montparnasse, le quartier de la Défense au complet, a été décriée… du moins par les Français.

Pourtant, Paris demeurera toujours, comme toutes les métropoles, en constante mutation. La Grande Arche du quartier de la Défense est un bon exemple d'un monument fort critiqué et qui pourtant s'intègre parfaitement au quartier ultra-moderne où il se trouve.

Le photo que je vous en montre… de toute évidence, cette photo montre son côté ultra-moderne, dans un contexte futuriste. Regardez cette photo en format plein écran, oubliez que c'est Paris, et dites-moi ce que vous en pensez. Ou encore, redites-moi ce que vous en pensez ! :-)

La Grande Arche

Located in the Quartier de la Défense, the Grande Arche is for photographers one of the most challenging monuments of Paris.

Update: About Paris Architecture

Paris has always resisted change, any change. One must not forget that the modern Paris is very nineteenth century. Its architecture and organisation have been totally rethought by baron Haussmann, a necessary change that was received with scathing criticism at the time. The whole centre of Paris is now very uniform. And people still do not want it to change! After the 1889 expo, many wanted that the Eiffel tower be brought down because they thought it was horrendous. Other new elements like the Centre Pompidou, the Montparnasse tower, and the whole Quartier de la Défense are considered as ugly by many people… at least in France.

Yet like any other metropolis, Paris is constantly changing. The Grande Arche of the Quartier de la Défense is a good example of a much criticised monument, even if it blends very well into its ultra-modern surroundings.

The very purpose of this photograph is precisely to show the Grande Arche and its very modern beauty. Open it in fullscreen mode, forget that this is Paris, and tell me what you think. Or tell me once again what you think! :-)

Post-traitement à la rescousse !

Dans la vraie vie, il arrive souvent que l'on n'ait pas le choix lors de la prise d'une photo : mauvais moment, mauvais temps, éclairage pourri… et le résultat est prévisible, pourri.

C'est alors qu'il faut faire appel au Dieu Photoshop  CC. Entendu, il va vous coûter 110 dollars par année en abonnement. Mais il n'a pas d'équivalent. Il trône au sommet de sa catégorie depuis toujours, c'est la référence, c'est l'outil des pros.

Et puis il est difficile de le pirater, voler je veux dire. Et puis bien sûr, il vous faut un fichier en format RAW, sinon vous allez rapidement vous retrouver dans la m… marmite.

La photo ci-dessous représente un bon exemple. Le soleil est directement devant nous, ce qui normalement annonce un désastre, comme on peut le voir dans la première photo, même si j'avais pris la peine de cacher le soleil derrière le clocher.

Regardez maintenant la deuxième photo, résultat d'un post-traitement soigné par couches successives. L'église se révèle finalement à nous.

Post-Processing Running To Your Help!

In real life, it happens very often that conditions are far from ideal when we take a photograph. It's not the right time, not the right weather, the sun is not placed correctly… and the results are poor as one could easily expect.

It's then time to ask for some help from the king Photoshop CC. Granted, Photoshop CC will cost you 110 dollars a year. But it's the absolute standard in the industry and at the professional level. Its dominance allows Adobe to keep prices high even if it still contains some blatant limitations that absolutely need to be addressed. Such is Life.

And you most preferably should work with a RAW format instead of the ubiquitous jpeg that should be a thing of the past.

The first photograph below is a good example of one of the many problems that you will often meet. The sun was right in front of me, which is usually a telltale of impending doom, even if I took care to hide it behind the steeple.

The second photograph is the result of some heavy post-processing work through successive layers. The church now reveals itself in all its glory.

En arrivant près de la Pointe du Raz, j'ai demandé au pilote s'il pouvait faire le tour de la pointe en virant sur l'aile, pour que j'aie un meilleur angle de vue. Il m'a répondu : « Compris, chef ! », et s'exécuta aussitôt. Quel coup d'oeil ! Quel spectacle inouï !

The Pointe du Raz

When we arrived near the Pointe du Raz, I asked the pilot if he could bank and go around the Pointe, thus giving me a better view of the coast. He answered me: "Compris, chef !", which means approximately "Yes, boss!". He then went around the Pointe while banking the airplane. What a view! I will never forget it.

Au large de la Pointe du Raz, il y a un phare qu'on ne peut bien photographier qu'en bateau, ou mieux, du haut des airs. Même par temps relativement calme, le phare est la plupart du temps battu par les vagues. Les contraintes de vol n'ont pas permis au pilote de s'approcher davantage. Mais le spectacle était déjà spectaculaire.

La Vieille Lighthouse

Off the coast of the Pointe du Raz, there is a lighthouse that can be easily photographed either by boat, or better, from the air. Even on calm days, the lighthouse is usually wave-battered. The pilot could not get nearer because of flying regulations. Even then, the scene was rather spectacular.

Ces photos ont été prises à une altitude d'un plus de trois cents mètres. Je les ai poussées à 6000 pixels par 9000 pixels avant recadrage, l'équivalent de 54 mégapixels. Les versions finales sont de l'ordre de 3800 par 5700 pixels.

Brittany's Coast: Le Guilvinec And Saint-Guénolé

I shot those two photographs from an altitude of a bit more than three hundred metres. I boosted them to 6000 by 9000 pixels, the equivalent of 54 megapixels, before reframing. The final versions have a resolution of around 3800 by 5700 pixels.

Je suis en train de refaire à partir de zéro le post-traitement de mes photos les plus importantes des dernières années, en utilisant les tous derniers algorithmes de Photoshop CC. Le but est toujours d'obtenir la qualité d'image la plus élevée possible en vue d'un imprimée d'au moins 50 cm par 75 cm.

Cette photo, ainsi que d'autres qui suivront cette semaine, a été prise à partir d'un Cessna qu'un de mes amis et moi avons loué pour une après-midi.

Brittany's Coast From The Sky

Photoshop CC has made huge progress compared to previous versions. It's time for me to post-process from scratch my most important photos from the past years. I aim to obtain the best image quality possible for printing in large formats like 20 in x 30 in.

The photograph below, along with others that I will show during the following week, was shot from a Cessna that one of my French friends and I rented for the afternoon.

Comment créer des objets volants furtifs !

Le truc bleu du message précédent n'était qu'une ébauche pour ce nouveau projet, la création d'objets volants furtifs sans ailes ni queue. Regardez ci-dessous : vous allez voir, derrière l'objet bleu, une version quasi invisible. Un avion quasi homéopathique…

À partir de là, les choses ont commencé d'elles-mêmes à déraper sérieusement. Il est tout à coup apparu une version plus petite, un drone en fait, quasi invisible. L'ennui, c'est qu'il ressemble dangereusement à un cétacé, ce qui pourrait miner ses chances. Qui a déjà vu un drone en forme de cétacé ?

Par la suite, il est apparu des versions non invisibles, ressemblant de plus en plus à des dauphins, qui ont tenté par tous les moyens de se bouffer les uns les autres en cercle ! :-)

Vraiment étrange. Mais c'est ce qui peut arriver quand on remet les principes scientifiques entre les mains de n'importe qui !

Designing Stealth Flying Objects!

The flying blue thing I presented in my previous post was a first step in a new project: creating stealth flying objects without wings or tail. Look very closely at the image below: you will see, behind the flying blue thing, a new, almost invisible version. A kind of homeopathic airplane if you wish…

Starting from that point, things really began to go awry. A miniature version, an almost invisible drone in fact, suddenly appeared. There is a small problem though: it looks like a small flying whale, and this is a very serious flaw: who has ever heard of a drone that looks like a whole?

After that, a series of visible copies suddenly appeared, looking more and more like flying dolphins, each one trying to eat another one in a circle!

This is really strange. I guess it's what happens when Joe SixPack meddles with Science. Enjoy! :-)

I will not comment much on this work. I started up with a photograph. I then applied techniques that go way beyond usual post-processing, in order to get a scratching effect on black paper.

Et pourtant, le nombre de marches pour se rendre au sommet du phare d'Eckmühl est près de six fois plus petit que le nombre de marches à gravir pour se rendre au sommet de la tour Eiffel. La tour Eiffel est bien sûr plus complexe, avec des escaliers dans chaque pilier, et les dernières 1100 marches environ, pour se rendre tout en haut, sont inaccessibles au public.

Le phare d'Eckmühl se trouve à Penmarc'h dans le Finistère. Il est fabriqué de granite et d'opaline.

Unending Stairs

Those stairs seem pretty high, yet they are only about a sixth as high as the number of stairs one must climb in order to get to the top of the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower if of course more complex, with stairs in each pillar, and the last 1100 stairs or so closed to the public.

This is the Eckmühl Lighthouse in Penmnarc'h, Finistère. It's made of granite and opaline.

Il y a quelques jours, France a mis en ligne d'intéressantes photos montrant des cormorans et des ibis. Cela m'a rappelé qu'il y quelques années, j'ai photographié en Floride un oiseau qui ressemble au cormoran mais est en fait un anhinga. Plus gros que le cormoran, c'est tout un oiseau !

Il est très facile d'approcher les gros oiseaux dans les bayous de Floride, si on se déplace en canot par exemple. On peut alors les approcher à quelques mètres tout au plus.

For My Friend France: An Anhinga

A few days ago, France posted some interesting photographs of cormorants and ibises shot in Southern France. This reminded me that a few years ago while in Florida, I photographed a bird that resembles a cormorant but is in fact an anhinga. Bigger than a cormorant, this is an impressive bird indeed.

Big birds are very easy to approach in Florida's bayous if you move quietly, in a canoe for example. You can then photograph them at a distance of no more than ten feet.

This pelican was not trying to fly, he was simply looking for fish! I was so surprised when it went down in the water that the two following photos are not top. It's the best I could do in those circumstances. I'll do better next time.

Je ne sais pas quel nom on donne en France à ce poisson. Chez nous, c'est une truite mouchetée. Et pas un petit spécimen !

Précision dans l'eau qui éclabousse, mouvement du poisson… je suis fier de mon coup. C'est une photo qui fait, comment dirais-je, un peu différent.

Pour ceux d'entre vous qui pensaient que j'avais pris ces pélicans par pure chance la première fois, voici une deuxième photo prise une dizaine de secondes plus tard et centrée sur le pélican du milieu.

Dans ces conditions, tout est affaire de préparation et de matériel adéquat. Prenez le temps de vous installer : long téléobjectif (pas de zoom si vous pouvez vous le permettre), un trépied solide, fondez-vous dans le décor si possible et ne bougez plus. Prenez votre temps.

Pelicans, Take 2

For those of you that thought I was lucky the first time I shot those pelicans, here is a second photo shot maybe ten seconds later, showing mainly the pelican in the centre of this group of three.

Success in those conditions is all a matter of preparation and adequate equipment. Take the time necessary to organise your setup before shooting anything: a long telephoto (not a zoom if you can afford it), a solid tripod, try to blend into your surroundings if possible, and don't move if not absolutely necessary. Take your time.
