The Ghost - A New Look / Le fantôme - un nouveau regard

The Ghost - A New Look (Thanks to Bill)
The first version was published yesterday. This new version has been reframed after Bill's (aka Butterbean) comment. I think that there is definitely some progress.

(Should Da Wife translate for friends?) I prefer this one, yes. Tighter? But it's not entirely James-like.

  3. Neither version does much for me Roger, FWIW, my first reaction to the thumbnail is a monkey falling from the tree.

  4. Yeah, I kinda see a monkey myself in the shadow. Anyway Roger, the picture looks much better now that you did it my way. ;~)

  5. Hmm...
Franchement, personnellement j'aime beaucoup.

Hmm... Opinions are well split I would say. Good! (Here, I renounce to translate literally the next sentence. I shall substtute the following one, which proves that I am no translator indeed!) After all, moroseness stems from uniformity and predictability! (Whew!)
I personally love the second version, way superior to the first one thanks to Bill's aka Butterbean's comment.
It looks like a monkey? So be it, a monkey it is. I do not consider this as a negative comment. Maybe I should... Bob O. often told me that I should refrain from naming certain images. Maybe it's the case here. Maybe I should have named it "The Flying Monkey". Or "Unnameable". Or "Unnamed". Opinions could - perhaps - have been different.
Thanks to Hélène and Suzanne, who sees Fantômas in the picture, and a special "Salut !" to Fabrice from Alsace, France. Thanks to Bill and Patrick for your highly imaginatve and useful comments.
Watch for the next series, you will be horrified.

  6. OK, pretty simple, I do like both images. the first is indeed more my style, the twisted gnarly shapes in the background have a dark sinister air about them, a " waiting for you to dare come further into their midst" for sure. This i like. And as Roger and I have often discusses I like the fuller frame. Yes ART school my friend! LOL! To my ruination, I don't know?

As too the monkey, Sure ok, I can see where a monkey can be made of this shadow, but I see a man more likely as part of the tree, a man who did get too deep into something he did not understand, and is paying the price. Man's relationship to Nature?

But, I generally I don't look into images for "cloud play" (no insult intended) that is easy enough to do, i admit, in this image, though until the monkey was brought up i did not see it at all, All I did see was a "feeling", the waiting, the "daring to come forward further into This realm of theirs."

We all see different things in an image, we bring to the image ourselves and then make it OUR own, and in viewing an image it is no longer the authors, it is yours. You put into the image what you brought with you to it. It is impossible to NOT do this, so the monkey is just a valid as any other interpretation. That is what it is. We mirror ourselves in every image we read. we cast our own shadow on an image. We cannot observe without changing what we see.

Ah,,,, puuuffttt "Art Speak." God I hate that stuff, but sometimes it is a necessary evil.

  7. Hello James! Aren't we vocal today? :-) In a few words, you know I tend to agree with what you say about this image and what different people are going to see in it.

However, what Patrick said is this: "Neither version does much for me". Frankly, isn't that his right? Patrick's style is usually much "cleaner" for lack of a better word, less complex, with more fluid lines like I shall show to PHOTOGRPOUP and GROUPEPHOTO in a few days.

And those differences are to be expected. I can hardly tolerate Stravinsky, and this is fine I think. Well, I know you know that.

Those exchanges are very instructive. I've possibly learned more in a week or so than usually in six months. Thanks to you James for this well-expressed opinion. Thanks to Patrick, Bill, Fabrice, Hélène, Suzanne... I am beginning to owe you one.

Salut James !

Cependant, Patrick dit ceci : « Neither version does much for me ».

Hi, and welcome on the blog. :-) Don't feel bad about it, this is fine by me. Look at what people wroite for Three Untitled Pictures Without Comment. None of the pictures is a unanimous choice. On the contrary, each of them was picked as first choice by some people...

P.S. I like it and you don't... we often agree but not always...
