Le vieil arbre - une photo pas très gaie
Mes remerciements à Stephen W., un ami de Californie qui m'a servi de guide ce jour-là dans la campagne californienne. Je lui dois beaucoup.
Il m'a fallu des mois pour arriver à quelque chose avec cette photo. Ce n'est qu'hier soir que j'ai trouvé. Il a fallu quelque chose... « Le vieil arbre » n'est bien sûr pas le meilleur titre. Je voulais tout d'abord l'intituler « Le vieil homme ». Il va tout de même faire l'affakre.
Pas de recadrage ici, pas d'effets spéciaux. Seulement un bon contrôle du filtre noir et blanc et de la densité de l'éclairage par caches. À vous de juger.

The Old Tree - Not A Cheerful Picture
Special thanks to Stephen W., a friend from California who acted as my guide that day in the California countryside. I owe him a lot.
It took months before I finally made a decent picture out of this one. I found out yesterday night. It took something... "The Old Tree" is not the real name of this picture that I first called "The Old Man". Il will do anyway.
No cropping, no special effects here. The final picture is the result of a good choice of black and white filter, followed by appropriate dodging and burning. For you to comment.

Cette image me brise le coeur. Quand tu me l'as montrée, je n'avais pas lu le message, je ne connaissais pas le titre original, et tout de suite j'ai *vu* le grand corps fatigué sous le ciel accablant, ramassé sur les genoux, mais pas encore allongé. Comme d'habitude, je ne me risque pas à faire des commentaires techniques (mais je vois la finesse, la fragilité de la végétation au premier plan) mais je reçois l'émotion… cinq sur cinq.

Oh, this is heartbreaking. When you showed it to me, I hadn't read the post, I was unaware of the initial title. I immediately *saw* the tall, exhausted body under the heavy sky, on his knees but not yet down. As usual I won't hazard to make technical comments (though I appreciate the fragile brittleness of the vegetation in the foreground) but the emotion… it gets to me loud and clear.
C'est vrai comme Hélène le dit , je vois plein d'émotions dans ces images et plus forte en nb, mais pour la couleur j'adore les couleurs, elle est plus gai en couleur donc j'aime mieux les m=émotions qu'elle transmet, mais je sais que tu veux y mettre plein de travail alors essaie donc en sépia, c'est toujours ce que je préfère, comme l'image transmet une idée de vieillesse, le sépia s'y prête bien,mais c'est bien juste une idée.
RépondreEffacerThis is a Good one My friend! You know I have a weakness for the black and white. Whether, or not this is true, I have almost always felt more emotion from a B&W and or sepia, than from a color rendering. This one hit my mark.

Mais ici la photo couleur a le potentiel d'une photo agréable, pas plus. Il n'y a pas d'âme dedans. C'est pourquoi je l'ai présentée sans la travailler du tout, seulement pour montrer de quoi j'étais parti.
RépondreEffacerLa seule « oeuvre » ici, c'est le résultat final en noir et blanc. C'est là que j'ai traduit toute la souffrance de vieillir.
À regarder plein écran, sans bordure ni menus, pendant plus qu'un instant.

Thanks Hélène, Suzanne and James, for your comments. I know, Suzanne and some others by email, that you prefer colour versions. Here however, the colour version is potentially a cute photo, nothing more. There is no raw emotion, no soul in it. Tht's why I presented it without any post-processing whatsoever, only to show my starting point.
The only "artwork" here is the black and white final photograph. This is where I expressed the agony of old age.
Should be looked at on a full screen, and for more than a passing glance I think.

RépondreEffacerAs far as a slightly looser crop is concerned, I had a series of shots of this tree and kept only this one, which has not been cropped. I should have kept a couple of other ones, but I did not, sorry.

Je vais essayer un effet sépia ce matin, Patrick, et te revenir là-dessus. Pour ce qui est d'un cadrage différent, désolé, je n'ai conservé que celle-ci, les autres sont à la poubelle. Je n'aurais peut-être pas dû...
