Retour sur Bréhat (1)

Nous avons visité l'île de Bréhat il y a neuf ans. Je viens tout juste de refaire le post-traitement pour impression en format géant de la photo qui suit. On y voit la chapelle Saint-Michel qui surplombe l'île.

Si vous n'avez jamais visité l'île de Bréhat, je vous recommande de le faire en mai-juin ou en septembre. Il y a beaucoup trop de touristes durant l'été.

Bréhat Revisited (1)

We visited Bréhat Island nine years ago. I just did the post-processing from scratch of the photograph below, in order to print it in large format. The photo shows the Saint-Michel chapel which dominates the island.

If you've never visited Bréhat, I suggest that you do it, preferably in May-June or September, in order to avoid the tourists hordes that plague the summer months.

Yep, it takes an imbecile of the first order of magnitude to drive a Hummer. If you drive it in France, words are beginning to fail me. In Paris, I am speechless.

Of course, this no-brain had to park with two wheels on the sidewalk. While often tolerated, it is of course illegal. And of course, if you drive such an aberration of a "vehicle", cops positively love to give you a ticket. And guess what happened later? He got one.

Un égo-portrait presque décent !

J'ai décrit sur face de bouc très récemment la différence entre égo-portrait et auto-portrait à l'aide de définitions :

Auto-portrait : un portrait de soi-même avec une dimension artistique. Matériel : appareil photo, trépied, retardateur, savoir ce que l'on fait, et traiter à l'ordi.

Égo-portrait (selfie) : mauvais portrait de soi-même pris avec un téléphone et un sourire raté. Dimension artistique : zéro.

Mais la réalité n'est pas toujours aussi simple, comme le montre l'égo-portrait ci-dessous. Les deux femmes de ma vie m'accompagnent et, ma foi, elles ont l'air de s'amuser follement ! :-)

An Almost Decent Selfie!

I've recently described on facebook the difference between a self-portrait and a selfie, using definitions of my own:

Self-portrait: it's the art of making one's own portrait. You need: a good camera with a time delay and a tripod. You also need to know what you're doing and post-process the result on a good computer.

Selfie: how to make one's own bad portrait using a cell phone and a smile that doesn't help things. Artistic dimension: zero.

But things aren't always so simple in everyday's life as you can see in the selfie below. The two women of my life apparently find the whole thing pretty funny! :-)

Le 6 septembre, j'ai publié un mot illustrant les capacités du boîtier Canon EOS 5Ds en photo macro à l'aide d'une petite mouche.

Je pousse ici l'expérience encore un peu plus loin en grossissant encore un peu plus la mouche. Ma jolie Hélène trouve cela dégoûtant. Moi, je trouve extraordinaire ce que l'on peut faire en 2015 avec les appareils photo, les ordis et les logiciels de pointe.

The Fly… The End

I've published on September 6 a post showing what one could do with the Canon EOS 5Ds body in macro photography, through the photo of a small fly.

Here I go a little further by boosting the image more. My pretty Hélène finds this photo disgusting. As far as I am concerned, I am amazed by what one can now do using a state of the art camera, a professional computer and pro software.

En essayant de voir jusqu'où je pouvais pousser ce boîtier, j'ai ouvert un disque dur et photographié sa tête de lecture-écriture. C'est vraiment tout petit ! La première photo montre le disque dur ouvert avec un stylo à côté comme point de comparaison. La tête, c'est l'extrémité du bras. Elle ne fait pas plus de 1,5 x 1,5 mm.

La deuxième photo est une photo macro prise avec l'objectif 180 mm série L de Canon, trépied, miroir bloqué pour éliminer toute vibration. Aucune prétention artistique, la photo est montrée pratiquement brute. La tête de lecture-écriture est maintenant clairement visible.

Mais dans la troisième photo, c'est autre chose ! J'ai agrandi à 100 pour cent, recadré, fignolé le post-traitement, et voilà le travail ! La tête de lecture écriture apparaît maintenant dans toute sa splendeur, un résultat impensable auparavant.

Je sais, je sais, il n'y a pas de justice en ce bas-monde et l'équipement moderne fait souvent foi de tout. « Fait à l'ancienne » ? Ben voyons.

The Canon EOS 5Ds And The Hard Drive

Here is another series of photos where I'm trying to see how far I can go with this body. I opened a hard drive and photographed its read-write head. It is really very small! The first photo shows the hard drive after I opened it. The read-write head is at the end of the arm. It's maybe 1.5 x 1.5 mm, not more than that.

The second photo is a macro shot entered on the head. I used a 180 mm macro L-glass series from Canon, tripod, locked mirror in order to get rid of any vibration. No artistic prettiness here and almost no post-processing. We can now clearly see the read-write head.

The third photo is something else though! I boosted the photo to 100 per cent, reframed and worked on noise and sharpening. Now the head appears in all its glory, a result unthinkable previously.

I know I know, there is no justice in this world and modern equipment rocks! :-)

Cet essai montre les possibilités de résolution du Canon EOS 5Ds. J'ai photographié la surface d'un iPad Air 2 qui affichait une photo. La résolution de cet iPad est de 264 pixels au pouce, soit 104 pixels au centimètre, au-delà des capacités de l'oeil humain. J'ai utilisé un objectif macro de 100 mm à f/8, ISO 100, trépied rigide, retardateur. Comme post-traitement, je n'ai effectué qu'une opération d'affinage sur le fichier RAW.

La première photo montre le résultat obtenu. On n'y voit bien sûr qu'une toute petite partie de la photo, mais déjà la grille que forment les éléments lumineux est clairement visible.

La deuxième photo montre une petite partie de la première, agrandie à 100 pour cent. La structure de l'écran du iPad apparaît maintenant avec une grande précision.

Pour la troisième, j'ai repris le fichier original que j'ai ouvert avec une résolution de 12000 par 18000 pixels, soit l'équivalent de 216 mégapixels, ce qui revient à multiplier à 200 pour cent la définition de la photo originale. J'ai ensuite agrandi à 100 pour cent une petite portion de la photo. Bien qu'au-delà des capacités réelles de ce boîtier. ce dernier exemple montre tout de même jusqu'où on peut aller.

Il y a moyen de faire mieux. Mais ça, c'est pour plus tard. :-)

The Canon 5Ds And The iPad Air 2

This essay gives an idea of the Canon EOS 5Ds' actual resolution. I photographed the surface of an iPad Air 2 showing a photo. This iPad has a 264 dpp resolution, beyond the resolution of the human eye. I used a 100mm macro lens at f/8, ISO 100, a solid tripod and the timer. The only post-processing operation I did was sharpening of the RAW file.

The first photo is the unmodified file right from the camera after sharpening. This is of course a small part of the iPad's surface. One can easily see the grid forming the iPad screen.

The second photo shows only a small part of the first, at 100 per cent resolution. The surface of the iPad screen now appears with great precision.

The third photo shows the RAW file boosted to 200 per cent, at 100 per cent resolution. Each screen element is now clearly seen. There are ways to go slightly beyond this, and we will come back to this resolution problem later.

À la demande de James Longster, voici un premier essai de photo d'insecte. Mais avec l'automne qui déjà frappe à la porte, la saison des insectes tire à sa fin dans ce pays de fous et les occasions se font plus rares. Ce matin dans le jardin, j'ai dû me contenter de petites mouches. Mais pour l'exercice, cela valait tout de même la peine.

Ces mouches étaient vraiment petites. En plus, il était difficile de les approcher d'aussi près que je l'aurais voulu.

La première photo est le résultat brut obtenu de l'appareil photo, après réduction du bruit et affinement.

La deuxième photo montre la mouche après agrandissement à 100 pour cent et recadrage. Il y a certes moyen de faire beaucoup mieux avec ce boîtier, considérant que j'ai travaillé par mégarde à ISO 800 au lieu de ISO 200 comme je voulais le faire. La définition aurait alors été sensiblement meilleure. Mais ce n'est pas le boîtier qui est en cause, mais plutôt le photographe !

Canon EOS 5Ds: Macro-Photography

James Longster asked me to show some examples of macro-photography of insects. In my country however, autumn is almost there and most insects are gone. All I could photograph this morning in the garden was some small flies. That was quite enough for the exercise though.

You can see first the photo as it came out of the camera, after the usual noise reduction and sharpening operations.

The second photo you see is boosted to one hundred and reframed. This photo was shot at ISO 800 by mistake. If I had set the ISO down to 200 as was my intention, definition would have been better still. But it's not the camera's fault, it's the photographer's!

Un nouveau boîtier

Boîtier : Canon EOS 5Ds, capteur plein format, 50,6 mégapixels.

Objectifs : zooms et focales fixes professionnels, série L de Canon.

Je viens tout juste de recevoir ce boîtier. Les images ci-dessous n'ont aucune prétention artistique et ne servent qu'à montrer les limites de l'appareil. Ce n'est pas un boîtier pour n'importe qui. Un peu comme un pur-sang, il a ses caprices. Traitez-le convenablement, prenez de solides appuis, un trépied solide de préférence, servez-vous de toutes les fonctions anti-vibration, il vous récompensera en vous donnant des résultats surprenants de définition et de résolution.

La première photo montre une fleur où le traitement du bruit et l'affinage ont été effectués, rien d'autre.

La deuxième photo est un recadrage de la première. Pas de prétentions artistiques encore une fois, mais au moins une composition un peu améliorée.

La troisième photo est un agrandissement à 100 pour cent de la partie de la fleur sur laquelle la mise au point a été faite. C'est ici que l'on peut voir tout ce que ce capteur peut donner comme résolution.

La quatrième photo montre jusqu'où on peut pousser une photo. On voit ici la portion centrale de la photo agrandie à 10000x15000 pixels, soit l'équivalent de 150 mégapixiels. On voit maintenant que la précision n'est plus aussi bonne et qu'on a dépassé les limites de l'appareil.

A New Camera Body

Body: Canon EOS 5Ds, full-sized sensor, 50,6 megapixels.

Lenses: professional zooms and fixed focals, L series ferom Canon.

I've just received this body. The images below are not artistic images, I made them only to show the limits of this camera. It's not for everybody. It's a bit like a thoroughbred, it must be treated with care… But if you use it the right way, bracing yourself carefully or best using a rigid tripod and all the anti-vibration tricks available, you will get results with very high resolution and definition.

The first photo has only been treated for noise and sharpening.

The second photo has been cropped in order to get a slightly better composition, nothing else.

The third photo shows the centre of the same image but enlarged at 100 per cent resolution. You can see here the part of the flower on which the focus was made. It's here that we can really see the resolution and precision that one can get with this sensor.

For the last photo, I boosted the image to 10000x15000 pixels, the equivalent of 150 megapixels. Now the image is not as precise even if it is acceptable. This is just beyond the limits of this camera.

J'ai photographié cette libellule il y a quelque temps, mais sans jamais être satisfait du résultat. J'ai repris la même photo cette semaine en me demandant ce que James en aurait fait. Je ne sais pas s'il aurait fait exactement cela, mais lui aussi se serait demandé : Mais que fais-je donc avec tout cet espace ?

Trop d'espace ? Mais je l'ai agrandi encore cet espace et j'en ai fait disparaître toute référence spatiale. Et pour faire bonne mesure, je lui ai donné toute la place !

I photographed this dragonfly some time ago but was never satisfied with the result. I reworked the same photo from scratch this week. asking myself what James would have done with it. I don't know if he would have exactly what I did, but he would have had to solve the same problem: But what do I do with all that space?

Certains des blogues que je suis sont infectés par un ou plusieurs logiciels malveillants qui font apparaître de la publicité non sollicitée dans des fenêtres indépendantes. ata.ro est un des plus intrusifs parce qu'il empêche l'accès à votre blogue ou ses commentaires.

Je suis actuellement en train d'analyser le code-source de tous les blogues que je suis qui posent un problème de ce genre. Il y en a près d'une demi-douzaine.

Notez que le codage et les algorithmes, ça fait aussi partie de mes qualifications. Si je vous dis que votre blogue contient du code dangereux, vous pouvez être certain que c'est vrai.

F. P., actrice et écrivaine du boulevard Davout, ton blogue est infecté par le logiciel malveillant ata.ro. Je l'ai retrouvé de façon répétitive dans le code-source, comme le montrent les deux illustrations ci-dessous. ata.ro n'est pas un virus mais bien un logiciel malveillant. N'empêche, il cause un tas d'emmerdements.

Si vous avez remarqué quelque chose d'anormal dans votre blogue et désirez mon avis, il me fera plaisir de voir si je peux identifier le problème.

Blogs: Beware Of Malware!

Some of the blogs I follow are infected by one or several malware that create unwanted ads in pop-up windows. ata.ro is one of the most intrusive and may block access to your post or your comment section.

I am in the process of checking the code of the blogs that I follow and that behave in such an unusual manner. There are maybe half a dozen of them.

Please note that I know what I am talking about: coding and algorithms are one of my fields. If I tell you that your blog contains malware, you can take it to the bank, it's true.

F. P., actress and writer from the Davaut boulevard, your blog is infected by ata.ro malware. I found it in the source-code of your blog, as can be seen in the two images below. ata.ro is not a virus, it is malware. It's a lot of trouble anyway.

If you think that there is something suspicious in your blog or in one of the blogs you follow, it will be my pleasure to have a look and give you a diagnosis.

Je me demande combien de fois Kenny, qui n'a pas un sou vaillant, a été arrêté par la police américaine pour cause de profilage racial. Souvent, je dirais.

La police américaine doit être réformée de haut en bas. Pour restaurer un semblant d'ordre et de confiance, il faudrait bien sûr se débarrasser des armes, mettre au rancart le foutu deuxième amendement, et accepter de partager. La mèche du baril dew poudre est de plus en plus courte.

I wonder how often Kenny, who is penniless, has been arrested by American police because of racial profiling. Quite often, I would say.

The American police departments must be completely reformed. In order to restore a beginning of order and trust, the United States must first get rid of all those guns that cause so many killings, rewrite the Constitution and be done with this stupid Second Amendment, and truly accept to share wealth, as it's done in all other western countries. The powder keg's fuse is getting shorter all the time.

Désolé pour cette absence prolongée. Nous sommes allés faire un voyage aux États-Unis suivi d'un court séjour en auberge dans les Cantons de l'est. En tout cas, me revoici…

Les États-Unis sont assis sur un gigantesque baril de poudre et n'ont pas l'air de s'en rendre compte. Du moins pas encore.

Ce baril de poudre, c'est la minorité noire, méprisée, maintenue dans une pauvreté abjecte, sans espoir de s'en sortir.

Amis Américains, réveillez-vous. C'est votre faute. Votre police sauvage, votre individualisme forcené, le refus de distribuer la richesse, et le foutu deuxième amendement. Les armes omniprésentes, une des causes d'un taux d'homicide effroyable et inacceptable dans tout autre pays évolué.

C'est toute votre société qui est à repenser. Son mécanisme même est détraqué, et vous avez beaucoup de pain sur la planche. Ne lancez pas le blâme à la communauté noire, ce sont vous les responsables.

Que de pauvreté, que de tristesse aussi. J'y reviendrai.

The United States And The Powder Keg

I've been away for a while, sorry about that. We were on vacation in the United States, and then went for a short trip in the Eastern Townships. In any case, I'm back…

The United States is sitting on a gigantic powder keg and doesn't appear to know it. Not yet at least.

This powder keg, it's the African American minority, despised, maintained in abject poverty, without hope.

American friends, wake up! Its time to get real, it's your fault. A brutal police force that profiles Black people, your shameful individualism, your refusal to share wealth, your deadly Second Amendment. Your ubiquitous firearms at the source of the highest homicide rate of the whole western world and by a very wide margin.

You have to rethink the way your whole society works. You have a huge task in front of you, and it won't be easy.

So much poverty, so much sorrow. I will be back on this.

Oui, mais… comment expliquer le rocher dans le coin inférieur droit, qui est bel et bien à l'endroit, lui ?

La vérité, c'est que oui, j'ai inversé la photo, elle s'y prêtait fort bien d'ailleurs. Par la suite, je me suis rendu compte que le coin inférieur droit semblait vide. Alors j'ai rajouté un rocher à la photo, mais à l'endroit ! Voir l'original ci-dessous, qui n'est pas une vilaine photo en soi. Il faut bien s'amuser un peu.
