Hélène and I went along the sea early morning to try to photograph this. I needed two hands and a powerful push to open the door, fighting huge howling winds. Hell is made of ice.

We were almost alone. No, we did not see Isabeau on the boardwalk, but I swear I heard Suzanne crying.

Suzanne Left Us This Morning

My friend Suzanne left us forever this morning. She passed away, probably without knowing it, in her husband Roger's arms.

She was one of my best friends. For those of you who read or commented on her blog, or on whose blog she commented, you must not blame her for not writing often during the last few months, it was almost impossible for her to do so. And now it's too late.

Is there a God to allow such things to happen? She believed so. I hope that this God, if He exists, will take care of her for eternity.

My heart is broken and full of regrets. I could not even see her those last few weeks, having my own pressing problems to solve. And now, there is no hurry anymore.

I've chosen to share with you two photographs that I shot in the Charlevoix region where she was born and that she loved so much. Photos shot during a photo trip with her. So many regrets.

No need from my part to comment those two photos, I think.

Twenty years from now, they will be fifty million. In the meantime, they will have to totally exhausted their groundwater and their aquifers. Tomorrow, this will be a disaster of gigantic proportions. They still don't know how much they will suffer.

And Beauty In The Visual Arts

Mon but premier est ailleurs.

Art And Beauty In The Visual Arts

As I was saying in my previous post, the beginning of the twentieth century has seen a brutal departure from the traditional relationship between art and beauty. Artists like Kandinsky have created the notion of abstract art. Picasso, after having explored several directions, provoked an uproar when he created cubism. Those two artists among others have transformed forever the visual arts. It's very important to understand what they've done and why. And I'm not even talking about artists like Braque, Albers and a thousand others.

Now tell me, must art be beautiful or not? Not anymore, we got rid of this straitjacket a century ago. In order to show what I mean, have a look below at Kandinsky's "Composition VII" and Picasso's "Guernica".

I'm not saying that I am another Kandinsky, or another Picasso, I'm not that stupid. Their conception of the visual arts has a profound influence on my work though. Some of my images may look beautiful to you, others may look ugly, but…

I'm not always trying to create something visually pleasant. My main purpose is somewhere else. And this is why I mention here once again the image called "Dragons" that I published a week ago. For once, I say that I created a work of art, one that is all about violence and oppression. I thought that it was clear and I was mistaken. From now on, it will be named "Violence And Oppression". It's not about beauty. It's about an idea.

Art And Beauty - Once Again

The very idea that art must be beauty, or vice versa, is a concept of the past that was blown apart towards the end of the nineteenth century.

As much as one may dislike music by modern composers like Stravinsky, Schönberg and others, it's a fact that their work had a major influence on all modern music. This is more obvious still in the visual arts. Already, some of van Gogh's work was disturbing and certainly not "beautiful" in a traditional sense. But later, Picasso and many others have shown that art and beauty are not, or not anymore, linked.

Modern visual arts have developed in a myriad of different directions. One must now ask himself: what's the message behind this work? This is the very essence of art. It's not enough to simply glance at a work of art in order to see if it's beautiful or not. It should never have been enough.

I've been a photographer for almost sixty years. I've probably taken hundreds of thousands of pictures. Most of them were poor, some good, a few excellent. Works of art? Rarely.Nature maybe a work of art in itself, but taking a good photograph of it doesn't mean that we have made art. The fact that I can make very good pictures of Nature doesn't make an artist out of me.

Creating a work of art is most of the time difficult. It requires a lot of energy and work, and thinking.

Sometimes we like a work of art at first sight. Often however, a work of art is a bit like an acquired taste: it takes time and effort.

I'll talk about this shortly because those concepts are very important to me. This is however the beginning of what I wanted to tell you. And now I feel like the teacher that I have been for so many years in a previous life.

A crowd in the night can be quite lonely.

Il faut me pardonner ma longue absence.

And this is all about freedom.

Contemporary Music

This work is the result of the intersection of my classical and modern training in science, music and image creation.

I did it almost unconsciously. It was Hélène who immediately found the right title for it. We've known each other for a long time…

It's always foolish and risky, specially when you're not an artist, to say this, but anyway: This work, which will certainly not meet unanimous approval, is one of my most important ones. I rate it at 9.5/10. It takes some guts, doesn't it?

Modern art? Yes. Abstract art? I don't think so. :-)

Étude : courbes et dégradés / Curves And Gradients: Study

Curves And Gradients: Study

At first, I created this image in order to solve a colour banding problem in gradients. Working successively in 8, 16 and 32 bits per colour, I found that Adobe's algorithms give almost perfect results as far as gradients are concerned. The file contains all the proper info but Adobe's software like Photoshop CC does not always show it properly with some graphics cards - and colour banding appears.

If you see some artefacts or banding, your browser is possibly at fault - browsers are notorious for their poor image handling.

Now about the image itself. This is a nice image I would say, nothing more. A very large print on a wall should be fun though.

L'image qui bouge / The Moving Image

The Moving Image

I made a first sketch of this image several years ago. Here is for the first time a temporarily final (sic) version of it.

This is a little experiment and I will need your cooperation. This is after all an image with very strange properties, made specially for you, a few hours before true celebrations of this New Year.

1. Download the image on your desktop and open it in fullscreen mode. I insist, this is very important if you are to see what I want you to see.

2. Get away from your screen a bit and gaze at the image. Take your time. Don't concentrate on a particular point, let your eyes wander over the image, looking at different parts of it…

Certain parts of this image are moving.

If you proceed correctly, if you take your time, you will see what I mean: one would swear that certain parts are moving, are rotating… I know it's not possible, but…

Some of you will never see it. I hope you do. Hélène says that she gets seasick if she looks at it for a certain time…

I'm proud of myself. :-)

I wish you all a Happy New Year, peace, tolerance and acceptance of others.

Gradients : Essay

Adding multiple gradients to an image in an application like Photoshop, you're often faced with some major problems like colour banding and the final product is not a smooth gradient. If you work in 8 bits per colour (jpeg format is 8 bits per colour), you will almost certainly see this problem arise. Even working in 16 bits per colour does not always yield satisfying results. I solved this problem by working in 32 bits per colour in Photoshop CC.

Talking About The Weather…

These days here, temperatures vary between -15 and -32°, on the cold side I would say. And we have a lot of snow. Two days ago we had another snowfall, around 45 cm, nothing to write home about… what a country.

Dragonfly Hunting

I shot this dragonfly at Cape Cod several years ago. This is a new post-processing with the latest tools of Photoshop CC.

James Longster and I went out for dragonfly hunting, with a very simple technique: we approached them from opposite directions. At some point, there were so many of them that we lost count. Near us, right in front of us, in some cases too near to be photographed. That was real fun.

You must absolutely look at this photo in fullscreen mode! :-)

I will present some other shots from this series later.

Different Countries, Different Superstitions

Every nation needs to believe in something that doesn't make any sense at all. How in the world is that possible?

The USA And The Negation Of Evolution

Fifty per cent of all Americans believe that Life on Earth was created by God six thousand years ago, a belief called creationism. It's written in the Bible, the scientific reference book. Of course Science has it all wrong! Of course, very few Québécois believe such a foolish thing. Vive le Québec! :-)

In The Meanwhile, In France…

The French believe in homeopathy, a warped thing that negates every principle of chemistry and physics. The anglo-saxon countries do not have a homeopathic Bible. Québec doesn't either. Once again, Vive le Québec! :-)

But there is more than that: a growing number of French people believe in biodynamic agriculture, a mix of astrology and sorcery. Most people in English-speaking countries, and in Québec, never heard about this new religion. And once again, Vive le Québec! :-)))

Come on, all of you guys, abandon your religions and come here, we will have a drink!

The Rocher Percé

The Rocher Percé, in the town of Percé at the end of the Gaspé peninsula, is a wonder of nature. Everyone should see it at least once. In truth, the whole region is beautiful.

I am now reprocessing all the photos in my archives. Here are two photos of this Rocher Percé. I took them nine years ago with an 8 megapixel Canon 20D. During this new post-processing, I boost those shots from 8 megapixels to more than 15 (4800 x 3200 pixels). This new post-processing yields noticeably better results than the previous images.
