James Longster Strikes Again: Indiana Colours

Jim sent me yesterday a picture about Autumn in Indiana. Here it is for you. At first glance it may seem like any other Autumn picture. Well, it is not, and this is why I show it to you.

A second look shows that this is not an easy picture. You can be sure that absolutely nothing has been left to chance here. Elements have been modified, one of them heavily, to fit Jim's purpose. Your comments will be appreciated. :-)

James Longster frappe encore : Couleurs d'Indiana

Bye bye

  6. Sadly we don't get autumn colours like this in South Africa. One day green and dead brown the next. Nice photo.

  8. Thanks to you all. This is indeed no casual photography. The sky has been totally replaced... among other things, but the colours are the original ones.

Suzanne, there is no pink in this picture... It would be curious indeed! I think that your display needs some calibration. I could do it for you with a spectrometer if you want, next time we meet.

    --

I thought he might have worked on the colours and the shape of the middle tree in order to make it look like a flame ?

Or darkened the upper cloud, to make the image more somber?

  12. @Hélène: As I told Suzanne, all leaves' colours are original. Neither temperature colour nor its tint were modified. This is risky business in such a scene. Contrasts are another ball game. One must not forget that colours are often much more violent there because of the sun's angle over the horizon.

The sky was totally replaced and carefully chosen. The dark clouds are not there for nothing... artist's decision... with an impressive result IMHO.

  13. Hi Roger Gauthier.
I think that the colors are great, the replaced sky, gives a nice touch to the picture, and the trees with that contrast give a real autumm felling, a very beautifull photo.
    Thank´s for sharing.
All the best, have a nice day, see you soon.

  15. Thank you José and Vaggelis for your comments. IMHO, the replaced sky. which is quite dramatic, adds a lot to a picture that was already striking.

  16. I thank you all for your glowing comments!

As Roger mentioned I completely replaced the sky, which was rather bland and did nothing for the feeling I was intending to show with this image.

I routinely replace, or add, to an image to take what is sometimes a "nice" image and try and take it to the next level. So, because I do this rather often, I have a folder in one of my images file that has nothing more than cutout skies, textures and the like, that I can go to to enhance or change the mood of an image, and that is the point of it all. The Mood is everything, other than that it is just a Photo.

The important thing was, in the case of this image, the UNIFORMITY of the sky I cut out. This monochromaticity, made the cutting process of the sky much easier. But then comes all the tweaking, and we all know HOW much of that is always involved.

    Again, thanks for the feedback!
    Jim
