If I may however, there are circumstances where you could think of jpeg shooting, knowing the fact that you are going to lose something somewhere. flying birds photography may be one example. You may be ready to shoot a hundred of more photographs of a single flying bird using the proper focusing settings (like computerised AI Focus), hoping to salvage a couple of good ones in the lot. RAW will allow around 10 shots in a single burst depending on the camera body and the CF card. A good camera body will allow you non stop shooting.

In other words, I do agree with you, no doubt about it. There are some circumstances however where RAW may hamper you. BTW, I don't know what one can do with the new super-fast (and super-expensive...) CF cards. :-)Roger Gauthierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01690736289188945063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4731100500338248454.post-24089628221172275322010-03-26T14:38:44.294-04:002010-03-26T14:38:44.294-04:00And get nothing in return except speed, and what i...And get nothing in return except speed, and what is speed without control?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12318123453481041593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4731100500338248454.post-78948147996840070912010-03-26T14:37:33.022-04:002010-03-26T14:37:33.022-04:00The rapid shooting is what I was referring to in t...The rapid shooting is what I was referring to in the "sports" comment. The RAW format does you give much more info. What you choose to do with this info in post-processing. The jpeg format does not give you this possibility as it contains much less info - often not enough info as in this case.

I would however add continuous shooting to the conditions where jpeg truly shines. The RAW file is way bigger and will rapidly fill up the camera's buffer memory. Jpeg with a good DSLR will allow non-stop shooting - I mean hundreds of shots at a time. :-)

Now, if you use RAW, you may well prefer darker but well defined images. This is the artist's decision. The jpeg format however is taking away from you a good part of this decision process.Roger Gauthierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01690736289188945063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4731100500338248454.post-9309878137962722132010-03-26T01:31:43.578-04:002010-03-26T01:31:43.578-04:00@Reltih: I had also that impression, Reltih. Lack of knowledge of the applications required to do a good job of it. I.E Photoshop (any of the new flavors).

2. Or lack of the money to invest in the equipment that make RAW worth while/possible to work in.

The first is relatively easily fixed, buy it, play with it, or even if you want, take a class in it. Get to know it.

The second of course is not so easily fixed, and as this is NOT an inexpensive pursuit, may or may not be of a high enough priority to spend $7,000.00 USD +- to get the body and lenses necessary.

Other than those two potential reasons, I am sorry, RAW is the ONLY way to get more than the occasional above average shot (and then if it had BEEN shot in RAW it could still be better).

I personally have a preference for images with a fair amount of darker tones in them. Roger will sometimes disagree with me on a particular image, but How dull would it be if all Photographers followed all the same rules, framed in exactly the same way, exposed in the same way? It would in short be boring.

But when it comes to RAW over .jpg? There is just NO competition. So thanks to all of you, with a special thanks to José MarÍa for explaining his positions. (Hello José MarÍa, happy to read you here... :-) )

... and of course I must disagree! This is why life's fun... And why do I disagree? Light precisely KILLS the first picture. Huge absolute white light patches in a photograph kill it, you cannot recover from it. It's a dead horse.

The second version does not have this problem. I made it dark, though, to retain the mystery of going through the narrow passage. You may think differently. I urge you then to take this second picture and modify its light. Do it and post back the result so all of us can compare.

Too much light is indeed a bad thing. Too dark a picture may very well be one too. But then it may be the artist's choice. Think of all those dark paintings by Georges de La Tour!

But the main point is: Can you recover info from those huge white patches in the first picture? No. Can you do whatever you want with the second one? Yes.

Roger :-)

••••••••••••••••••••••
