The Dorwin Falls - A Second Look / Les chutes Dorwin - un nouveau regard

The Dorwin Falls - A second look

Hélène and I went back to the Dorwin Falls this week. I wanted to capture the violence and the danger of the Dorwin Falls. For this it was necessary for the weather to cooperate- at least a bit!

when we arrived, the snow was almost gone. Good. But the sky was overcast with occasional slight rain, even a bit of pellets of frozen rain. But looking at the clouds, I saw hope of some sunshine, and that was what I was desperately waiting for! So I installed the equipment and waited.

After an hour or so, sun rays suddenly came through for a few minutes and I took shots like a madman.

Now look closely at that picture. You may like, or not, but this is exactly what I wanted to do.

  • Absolutely no cropping, that's the real McCoy
  • High ISO (1000)
  • Very short exposure time: 1/5000 s
The usual slow speed shot would never have conveyed the power of those falls. You may also ask yourself why I chose to cut the top of the falls, among other strange things.

Well, please comment and argue if need be. I am listening.

P.S.: I will present a few other shots of this tomorrow.

Note : Je vais présenter demain quelques autres photos prises cette journée-là.

The Tumultuous Dorwin Falls / Les tumultueuses chutes Dorwin

  1. Magnifique et vertigineux… ou peut-être le contraire :-)

    --

Sure, I get the tumultuous part, at left. What I don't get is why you should allot so much space to the water "cloud" on the right.

  3. Hélène : Comme a dit Dorémi, c'esr vertigineux.

Pourquoi ?

Hélène: As said Dorémi, this waterfall causes vertigo. You know it, you were there...

One hint: This picture is unbalanced, it's unstable and strange in a way. Usual rules do not apply. Why?

  5. not sure on my part Roger.... I find those lines to lead... nowhere... the falls lead me to that empty cloud Helene is tlaking about....
yeh the upper left bit is mad, violent... but all that mad water is not hitting anything... there is no impact....
I am afraid to say that I cant see the violence you were looking for..
    :(

  6. Steff, this is exactly what I created. Illogical and disquieting. I ask once again: Why did I do that?

A very precise image at the top left, only to fall into nothing. Chaos. Beautiful? I don't know. Disquieting and unusual? Those are the buzz words, you just don't know what's waiting for you. Look at it with a different mind. :-)

Thank you for taking the time, and don't hesitate to answer if you wish.

  7. I, like it seem always happens, find that the simple and Ordinary are the most beautiful. this has a burst of life (as compared to the original Frozen Fall, that showed a potential for this violent awakening of Spring, I do agree however that the center of the image is very subtle in the center, Art likes this when it is used in contrast to other aspects of a piece of art. I enjoy this softness / void /calm, in the storm as it were. But as usual I could not but play with it. I made a few subtle changes, don't know if they are even truly noticeable. SLoL

  8. To Anonymous (SLoL): Well well well James, I'm not sure what you mean exactly, but it is so elegantly said that I am sure I agree. Here is a link to the picture as modified by you: James' post-processing.

Very subtle, but enough to create a new image. I like it, even if it is no more what I intended to do.

My apologies to both Lords of the Lenses, I can't tell the difference between your pictures. Shows what i know, i expect.

I have to say though that once I viewed the original picture on Roger's large monitor (as compared to my laptop), it was… well… a fall of a different color!
